News on buying a homestead: We have started looking actively at real estate! Unfortunately, we are finding that this whole process is a lot harder than we expected. After more than a hundred houses online and a few in-person showing, it’s shocking just how tight the market is – and what that is doing to prices in our area. We live in a semi-rural community, it’s not a hotbed for inflation and yet, finding the homestead life we are looking for is a challenge.
As we work through the question of where we will build our homestead, one of the things we have realized is that we are going to need to compromise on some of our requirements. As we talked through some of what we really expect to find in a homestead, we have some things that we are know are bare minimum – and others that are “nice to have” but we’d really like them!
On Lauren’s buying a homestead list, our property would be at least 2 acres – but probably more like 5 – a kitchen that supports canning and projects, and the house needs to be in reasonable shape.
As nice to haves, we would end up between 5 and 15 acres, a gas stove, space in the basement for a cold storage room, and room for outbuildings or existing outbuildings.
Unfortunately, we are finding that the properties in our area – at least anywhere near us – are going for $700,000 or more! It’s somewhat discouraging but we are discipling ourselves to be patient, or at least doing our best. We didn’t expect just getting to a place of “take my money for the land and a house” would be as hard as it has been.
In the meantime, as we have shared on our instagram, the Christmas season is in full swing and each day of the Advent calendar, we are doing holiday activities with the kids.
